# I'm quoting a reported statistic on the financial divide between rich and poor
which is greater now than in the days of slavery

I'm not saying we're slaves

# reported where?
Sorry, I think the comparison is fatuous. I'm in South Carolina at the moment and, having toured a rice plantation yesterday, I'd say the slaves were worse off than the poorest in the UK at present.

Anyway, I'm off for a mint julep.

# I believe the statistic springs from here
hotterthanapileofcurry.wordpress.com/2010/04/22/londons-rich-poor-gap-widest-divide-since-the-days-of-slavery/
it's saying how rich the rich are, not how poor the poor are. I assume slavery is used as an example of rock bottom.

# Slavery would give someone zero wealth, zero debt
I'd guess that now, there are people with little wealth, significant debt (albeit with greater freedoms than slaves).
