Apparently it was very popular with the boys at Eaton.

# First off, excellent caricature..
You are obviously a talented artist.

Second, a question for the board. And please don't take this in the wrong way, I'm truly curious about the answer.

I'm non-British and I was a child during most of the 80's so I didn't pay much attention to UK politics back then. On the top of my head I mostly associate Ms. Thatcher with some war in the South Atlantic and with the closing of some coal mines that were too expensive to keep running (and which I suppose were also polluting the environment, although I'm sure that was not the cause).

Admitted, the above is not quite true. I did see the film some time back. But still, that was mostly an account of the events as seen from Downing Street so it may have been biased.

What I'm wondering about is this: How come that this lady, who I suppose is just a little old lady these days, can still fuel so much hatred even decades after she has had a say in anything? And this is not a critique of this image, which in addition to being well executed, is no worse than most other stuff that you will find on b3ta. But by looking at a site like www.isthatcherdeadyet.co.uk it would appear to me that she is loathed like few others.

Again, I'm not saying that she was no c*nt. She probably was. But I'm curious about the details, from a British perspective. Please consider me the ignorant foreigner, and again, please don't take this question the wrong way.

# She polarised the British people like no other figure I can think of in history.
She was the political equivalent of marmite. People loved her or hated her. Very few were indifferent.

Have a read of this, this and this if you're interested.

# oh, and "excellent caricature"
Sadly not mine. I'm just a photoshop monkey. The caricature was by the immensely talented Luck and Flaw

# she said
"There is no such thing as society" and set about destroying it. It's been a dog-eat-dog country ever since; it's no coincidence that surveys always show people were happiest in the 1970s, before her time. To make her government some quick cash and give the impression of economic competence she also privatised everything, which is why we now pay vast amounts for gas, electricity, train fares, water etc to mostly foreign-owned firms.

# Thanks
Guess that was the kind of explanation that I was hoping for ...

So would I be correct to say that the whole Tony Blair "New Labour" act was just Thatcherism with a smile? That guy always did seem a bit faux to me. And I guess in hindsight everyone can now see that sending troops off to fight over some patch of desert wasn't a smart move. Neither was letting City of London turn into a gambling casino nor letting the rest of town turn into a housing bubble. Well, these may be my personal opinions.

Anyway, Thatcher attracts hate to this day because she was the one who permanently offset the political picture and pretty much killed off any true left wing opposition. Rightly understood?

# My mother voted for Thatcher 3 times...
and I'm on the right wing myself (though I'm more of a free market liberal than a social traditionalist), and it's true that the nation was split pretty much down the middle on loving or loathing her, few have a weak opinion of her. Put it this way, in June 1997, when her sucessor John Major left office, Britain was a far more materially prosperous , far more tolerant society, and the former communist world much freer, than it would have been had James Callahan won the 1979 General election. On this website you'll not get much unbiased opinion though, as it's about 90% left of centre on here. "No such thing as society" was a misquote however, she was using the word "thing" literally, critiscising the idea it is a manipulable object.

# The boys at Eton...
...would know that "Eaton" is the incorrect spelling.

And that Thatcher grew up in a working class household in Lincolnshire (grocers daughter etc) and went to a state grammar school, so any "posh" jibes against Maggie are logically invalid.
