I can't say I know many Australian authors. The famous ones are Colleen McCulloch and Thomas Kinneally (not sure of the spelling).
Being a scifi fan, I rather enjoy the work of Sara Douglass and Matthew Reilly, neither of which I'd consider "Australian Literature" :)
Personaly I think the stereotyped 'aussie culture' of bbqs, flies, dingos, thongs (flipflops), arid sheep stations and the black stump to be rather boring.
I rather enjoyed a book called Changi Photographer by a guy named George Aspinal which is an illustrated tale of a guy taking photos during the Japanese occupation of Singapore.
Probably not a lot of help, but there y'go :)
