It was only made because the author wanted a version that actually followed his novel
Which, while it made Jack's character make a little more sense finally, unfortunately meant it was yet another Stephen King adaptation- they simply don't work. Mr. King's magic is very much with the written word.

magic is very much in the first chapter, after that the rambling fuck has no idea what he is doing and seems to just type more words in a desperate bid to avoid bringing it to a conclusion being that he has no idea how to end a story.

As someone who has read a lot of his stuff, I have to agree.
I like his books, but he does come up with lackluster endings quite frequently.
