maybeyou can get that kind of effect by using an image as a mask of itself then playing with the contrast on the mask layer? (Copy the image, apply a mask layer, then paste the image onto the mask). You can certainly get some interesting effects by doing that, but I'm not sure exactly what results you'd get!
edit - actually, I;ve just had a quick play, and I doubt that'll work! Still interesting to play with though! :O)
