Could it bebecause the unreasonable loser in the story is actually the guy who booked and went on holiday in secret rather than have a five minute conversation with his own brother?

And what makes you think he didn’t want or even have a 5 minute conversation?
There’s rather a step between having a five minute conversation with a serial narcissist and indulging him for an entire fortnight.
He is a loser though, just not in the way you've revised the episode.
