I would've gone out of my way to avoid meeting him:
Never meet people whose work you admire...especially if they're notoriously unpleasant curmudgeons.

Just judging by his world view I guess he was curmudgeonly because society irked him (and the Dresden bombing would make the most tolerant of us into a stinker).
I'm a fan of The Beatles. I had a vivid dream in which I met J.O. Lennon and woke up thinking "What a c word!"
