I t hought..... that a car would stall as soon as the exhaust went under-water.

it was hard to get it back up the fjord but it managed, and the car kept running at least until after he'd swapped it for the BMW

I reckon it'd keep going until the engine's air intake goes under. There should be enough pressure to keep the exhaust dry at the other end. Not that I've ever tried this, so I'm probably wrong.
