Conversation Killers
ThatNiceMan asks: Have you ever been talking with people down the pub when somebody throws such a complete curveball (Sample WTF moment: "I wonder what it's like to get bummed") that all talk is stopped dead? Tell us!

fuck knows
how we got onto the conversation, but one night at uni a few of us were having a pint and had somehow got onto the subject of suicide (Cheery bunch). one of the girls came out with the classic "well I think suicide is selfish" to which our quiet mate replied "I don't think my dad was selfish when he killed himself"
we all knew the lad's dad was dead, and had been for a while, but none of us knew how he'd died. Was a bit of a long silence

Common comment
But an ignorant one from that lass. Suicide is the last act of someone who cannot cope anymore. Not just a "oh things are a bit tricky, I think I'll top myself" but an overwhelming feeling of the only way to stop not only their own suffering but often, in their eyes, the suffering of those around them who they may think themselves a burden to.
That said, if in their final thoughts they decide to involve someone else in their death, e.g. jump in front of a train, then that is selfish. So the method, but not the act itself can be selfish.

Speaking as someone who has attempted suicide on more than one occasion
I can now say that all three were definitely selfish acts. Furthermore I know of many others who have first hand experience and they all agree. It is very hard to kill yourself and, in my opinion, those that succeed only do so because were both selfish to the extreme and very very unlucky.
Being selfless is the only way I have found to prevent it.

I don't think it's selfish either.
When I seriously contemplated it I thought everyone would be better off without me -- I still do on occasion. I now know, from stories on here amongst other things, that suicide is a form of death families can't get over so well -- but I had no idea of that at the time.
