Im an animal lover, meet my two year old Bullmastiff;

Granted this is not a weekend but sometimes I feel events happen in my life just to correspond with B3tas QOTW, and today I wish it didn't.

Little mite started limping on her back leg.. Checked for glass or stones to no avail. Offending leg got worse, then better and now ultimately lame. So we go along to the vets and she's stretching the dogs leg more than Colleen Nolan in her 'workout' DVDs only to conclude that she most probably has a cruciate ligament rupture. My dogs not Micheal Owen in the 2006 world cup but that is not the point.. This op is most probably £2000, not an england world cup.. But for me my ill dog is far worse.

And to top that off, shes wondering around feeling sorry for herself all cuddled up with puppy dog eyes and I'm going to be the one to take her to the vets and abandon her tomorrow morning. Hopefully the xray will show a tear, if not its 3 months bed rest with a 50-80% chance of the other leg needing an operation at some point.

Length? Its between the femur and tibia, somewhere behind the patella

#edit# Poorly dog has had to have the op, will be picking her up at 2! think me and mum will be sleeping downstairs with her on alternate nights..fun fun.

##EDIT## Shes just dozy now.. 3/4 months til shes up like normal!

Honestly?
Im not sure, it all sounded a little confusing to me which isn't great when you have to recite what was said to parents etc. To me it sounded like extracapsular technique (tradition tecnique) but after reading up on it after getting home i'm not too sure, that doesnt sound right for such a large breed. I just have to go in and sign the consent form when she has the xray, then they're going right ahead with it if their suspicions are correct.

Everyone (not too sure about dogs, but it's worth a try) likes being tickled, and it'll take her mind off it.

Or get her one of those skateboard attachments on her back leg, put your cute video on your google adwords linked blog, and watch the cash roll in.

Poor little dog!
I hope that whatever is wrong, it's something easy to heal and affordable for you. It's a terrible thing, having to decide between all the money you have (or more) and the loving little creature you need to protect.

Our little cat is dying of cancer, and we want to start a fund in her honour to raise money so that people don't have to choose between the rent/mortgage/groceries/heat/water and the life of their pet. We had no choice to make, but if we can help other people who are in this position then her death isn't for nothing.

its lovely what youre trying to do, I think there is a charity which will do operations at a cheaper rate over here if youre stuggling. Its not the cost really, its just the recovery and the chance of the other leg going, shes such an active thing!

I know it might be hard, but think about this..... that money you could put into your pup, give them a some extra life rather than pain and sadness. Two grand... I know it's a lot, but what more fun will you have? Spending it on dvds and beer or a great healthy pup who will give you a million times more fun than a crappy dvd, beer and sitting around watching pup be poorly.

its no contest, whatever it is she will have it fixed, just the chances of the other leg needing doing at some point is also high. Then it is likely she will get arthritis D= will be needing the alcohol later :) Im guessing she will too!

Insurance?
Seriously, we pay about £20/month for fully-comp pet insurance and they've been absolutely brilliant on more than one occasion (dedicated insurance company for pets - good reputation for paying out when needed).

Especially when the cost of treatment was a fraction of the amount that we had paid into the policy.

We had a problem with out Boxer's weight - he looked like he was starving all the time: hip-bones/ribs showing but eating like a horse, so we took him to the vet school who carried out about £1k worth of tests - blood tests, tox screens, liver/kidney scans, x-rays, etc.

He was fine so far as they could tell, but the insurance company paid the lot!

And we've had a few bumps and scrapes that they have also covered. All we need to pay for ourselves is check-ups, flea treatments, and boosters once a year. (Oh - and his castration, but that was a preventative surgery which is usually not covered. If he had developed testicular cancer, I was told that they would have paid for the surgery then.)
