This is a question Family codes and rituals

Freddy Woo writes, "as a child we used to have a 'whoever cuts doesn't choose the slice' rule with cake. It worked brilliantly, but it's left me completely anal about dividing up food - my wife just takes the piss as I ritually compare all the slice sizes."

What codes and rituals does your family have?

Threes and Twos
When walking down the street it is IMPERATIVE to not walk all the way across a set of 3 man hole covers (coming out the side of a 3 doesn't count), this will only result in disaster. However walking across a set of 2 will bring you a dose of good luck as strong as a tiny, tiny chilli (seeds and all).

The mighty 2's also have the power to negate the evils brought on by having walked across a 3, but virtue of a cruel twist of pedestrian traffic or sheer stupidity.

Introduced to me by a friend, but spread to my siblings and still alive and well.

Beware the 3's and covet the 2's.

What
the cock is this all about?

Someone said this to me before.

They're just drain covers.

It makes no sense. No sense at all.

Some things...
are just fact, pure immutable fact. For example, a ton of lead DOES weigh more than a ton of feathers (Or at least it does if you're babymum).

This
is pretty much the answer I got before (except the lead/feathers thing, but we'll leave that one alone).

It didn't convince me then.

Still, I'll be the one who looks stupid if I walk over three drain covers, then get squashed by a large truck.

Christ, I kind of do that
but only the avoiding the threes bit. And only on the big grey concrete covers, not metal ones.

I think it's largely because I have a friend who not only used to avoid them, but would push me to one side if I was going to walk across one so that I wouldn't.

So it's not entirely irrational of me, it just became easier to avoid them myself rather than constantly being pushed around.

Well, that and three's are more likely to collapse and plummet me to my doom than twos.

Let the twos...
into your life and shower yourself with glorious good luck. It goes double if you're holding some scraggy old heather you've just bought from an angry gypsy lady.

I'm with you on this
not the 2's though

if you tread on a 3-drain then you are fucked. end of story.

I started avoiding them for the same reason as scarpe. my bastard mate used to shove me away from them.

he trod on one once. he's dead now. let that be a lesson to you all.

*fears*
I've trod on loads of them in my time.

*looks about nervously*

3s
..bad luck, 2s bring good luck, and 1s are a gamble, bringing love in all its guises. 4s are kind of doubled-up 2s and as such, bring a bit of good luck, but not as much as a 2. 5s are a lucky dip from pandora's box. 6s are very lucky.

Er.. this is just me. I've got loads of these little neuroses. Recently I've been doing by best to think, "fuck it" and step on whatever comes my way, and my life's not changed, just I probably look more sane when walking through town.

I do this
and am so neurotic about it that i have even walked into the road to avoid treading on three together. However, i usually find walking in to the middle of the road puts me in a far more dangerous position than walking on three drain covers....
