There is a (sort-of) actual reason behind that one. When shop assistants refill the shelves the newer items they are putting on are placed at the back (if they are doing their job properly of course!). it's called stock rotation it's so they sell all the short coded items quicker and not have as much waste.
so all your doing is making sure your missus buys food that will go off quicker.
Obviously it makes more sense for fresh products. I don't think the extra 2 months on a tin of beans will be affected that much.

I do this with anything sprayable (deoderant, polish, air freshener etc)
