I never 'got'When I was very young, my dad always used to tell me 'if you ask, you don't get'....it wasn't until I was in my late teens that I realised that wasn't the way the phrase went...and that I never 'got' anyway.

My dadkept it simple with "I want, doesn't get"
Mind you, the big liar also told me that trains going over the Forth Bridge (cantilevered for those who don't know), went up and down the top rails like a roller-coaster. I was at least eight before I actually saw a train going over and realised the truth!
