I'm a Londoner
But I spent 4 years at Uni in the West Midlands, and I can tell you right now that Birmingham only has two landmarks:

1 - An office building that looks like a pepsi can
2 - New Street Station, which has less architectural merit than dog poo.

But the fact is that 1/4 of the UK's population live in London or the South East, as well as the government, so it's not all that surprising that it hogs the media coverage a bit. And besides, apart from the odd stabbing, nothing interesting ever happens in Birmingham - BBC Midlands today once led with a story about a dog that was frightened by a firework. At least we get Yardie shootouts.
