Not all that random.You'll generally be able to recognise themes from the day in your dreams and the context changes are mostly due to becoming more aware of the dream and so attempting to shape it subconciously.
I know I'm having mental and/or enotional problems when my dreams are commonplace and devoid of emotional cues.
