This is a question Amazing displays of ignorance

Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic tells us: "My dad's friend told us there's no such thing as gravity - it's just the weight of air holding us down". Tell us of times you've been floored by abject stupidity. "Whenever I read the Daily Express" is not a valid answer.

Tuba Mute
I play the tuba. I used to play in a youth orchestra.
There was a very ditsy (but very buff) oboe player, who was very easily convinced that the only people who could manufacture my tuba Mute were NASA, given its size and complexity.

A tuba mute is essentially an inverted metal bell.
....made by NASA.

surely an inverted bell
is just a bell, or am I missing something?

One of the things I enjoyed about my short stint as a music teacher was making these sort of things up.
French horns are actually made from the pipes you get around boilers, and trumpet players are just people who wanted a way to carry spare parts for their car around with them. It's surprising how many teenagers will believe this stuff.

OT: One of my best friends is a horn player, and I have been slapped repeatedly for "crimes against brassy people".
