DIY twats

I bought a house in tropical Queensland, lovely old place, built about 1925, all good timber and a veranda out the front. The kitchen and bathroom had been modernised decently but apart from repainting, the rest of the interior was original.

There were gorgeous skirting boards with ogive tops and matching architraves. Fretwork ventilators above the genuine 3-panel doors, a picture rail and really high ceilings. I scoured local lighting shops for fittings that were close to 1920-ish and got a vintage looking ceiling fan. I took the brass window latches off the 8-pane windows, cleaned off years of tarnish and paint splash, polished, lacquered and put them back on freshly painted windows. Lovely.

A few years later I moved away, then when passing through the town called in on old neighbors. While I was there the third set of owners after me called in. So I used to own No. 31? Well, yes. Oh, we have been doing some work, come in for a look.

They'd ripped out out the lovely old skirting boards, the architraves and the picture rails and sheeted over the timber wall boards with featureless plasterboard. The 8-pane hinged windows that caught every stray breeze were gone, replaced by sliding aluminium framed panes that caught nothing. The interior looked like it had been built the week before.

Some twats don't got no taste at all.

Know what you mean
I bought a 100+ year old house where the previous owner had spent most of his time ripping out the original features and replacingthem with plaster board, smoked glass doors and bright yellow glosspaint. Now i am spending my time trying to put them all back...

girl who hardly opens her windows cos it's almost never warm enough to, why do you want windows to catch every stray breeze? I can't even picture what they'd look like :S

Which is a slightly bigger version of the house I had.

It was in Central Queensland, not North or Far North Queensland. North Queensland starts about Bowen. FNQ is north of Cairns.

I live in Far North Queensland...
...which actually starts somewhere north of Townsville. Cairns (where I live) is well into FNQ territory.
I sympathise fully with your comments about twats spoiling the character of Queenslander style houses.
The one I bought had cork floors covering some beautiful old timber in excellent condition. The previous owners had also ripped out some classic casement windows and replaced them with aluminium security/flymesh screens. Strangest of all was the covering up of the original tongue and groove walls with random groove panels - those awful sheets with a woodgrain printed on them.
Nearly finished restoring it to it's former glory, but Queenslander houses are a serious money pit!

Currently doing very similar things to lovely victorian houses in my area - range rovers, extensions built of glass, trees cut down in favour of gravel (presumably cos wags can't garden in case it affects their manicure). Totally sympathise!

It's even worse when it's the in-laws
My husband declined his half-share in the family home so that his brother would have a solid financial start. The twat proceeded to do up the family home with out-of-scale, contemporary cabinetry, furniture, and plush carpet, rip out the garden and its lovely (and expensive) old plantings. And in place of those plantings, put up one of those awful metal assemble-yourself sheds directly in front of the "picture windows" so we had a lovely view from half the house.

I've bitten my tongue bloody but I did slip once and mention that some of the local plant nurseries would have bought and professionally removed those plantings, paying him enough to fund some of the "improvements." Oops.

Spent
The weekend with a friend’s parents in Lismore NSW. They ran a farm and had a similar place to what you described, only difference is they had imported all their sash windows and doors from blighty....Don't think they were rich but macadamia farming had been good to them and they loved collecting Edwardian stuff, they even had a massive telescope with observatory in the garden.
