I long since concluded that:
No-one actually buys teaspoons. Instead they form, one-at-a-time, from traces of organic debris in used dishwater; given the right conditions like heat and pressure (in a similar manner to fossil fuels).
Yes, we may have thrown some in the water earlier; but what we fail to notice is that sometimes we drop N teaspoons into the water, and finish with N+1.

Yeah, but if the Russians replace the North Sea with a huge dishwasher
the spoon strategy will no longer work.

Fab and very true
However, I do take issue with my learned friend above.
I have never accumulated teaspoons. On the contrary, mine seem to vanish without a trace on a fairly regular basis.
My cutlery draw is full of mismatched teaspoons and when I have a massive crowd of, say, 15 or more people who come round to my house for tea, crumpets and those little triangle-shaped cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off, I am very embarrassed to offer my guests teaspoons for their tea stirring activity because of the mis-matchedness, causing my position as one of the socially elite to be put severely in jeopardy.
