People stopped bothering about file sizes.
Used to be an art to getting a particularly long image under 50k still keeping it legible, gifs even more so but I never did many of them.

It's simply a matter of
reducing the colour palette. As I understand it, the gif format saves the first frame, then the data for any changes in subsequent frames. The fewer the colours, the fewer pixels need to change.
