My ex mrs used to suffer from the same thing, many a night she would wake up saying she was surrounded by spiders or that there was someone in the room. I used to have to play the big man and go over and turn the main bedroom light on. But some nights i have to be honest and say she would catch me off guard and i would shit a brick for a few seconds before realising what was going on. She would regularly beat the crap out of me in bed too and the weird thing was i would sometimes wake up feeling like i had just been hit and then she would stop so i couldn't tell what was happening. This between her bouts of unintelligible verbal sleep babble was enough to make chuck norris feel the fear

I too know this strange experience!
My wife is more than prone to waking in the middle of the night and holding what may, at first, appear to be an entirely lucid and reasonable conversation with me... before saying something utterly bizaare thus tipping me off to the fact she is actually still asleep!
e.g.
HER: Oh, you're awake. And in bed.
ME: Erm.. yes, it's 3 am.
HER: Oh good. Is the cat in?
ME: No idea...they've got a cat-flap, remember?
HER: That's fine. It'll be great for flowers and horses tommorow...
ME: Oh, you're asleep aren't you?
HER: Yes. *snore*
