I know what he means though
it always irritates me when I see women exercising with tiny little .5kg pink dumbells.
What is that possibly going to do for you? It requires less effort than almost anything else you'd be doing at home. It's like they're chronically terrified of lifting anything that looks like a weight, might cause them to transmogrify into a butch lesbian named Agnes.

As someone who has lost several stone due to gallstones...
You do need to build up gradually, as you start off very weak after losing all your muscle. You wouldn't put an anorexic on big weights, would you?
Same with people who are post-op (as I will be next month, woo): they need to exercise to gain strength back, but they can't do too much as it'll pop the stitches!
Just a thought...
