The Clash
I have never understood the reverence which is given to The Clash.

They were okay, but London Calling is a really sprawling album with not that many worthwhile songs on it.

I just really do not get why people think they are so great. Joe Strummer was so constantly furious with everything that you can't understand a word he's saying.

London Calling is also my favourite album ever. So many styles are covered with such verve and passion. Each song unique and some truely awesome lyrics.

It's mainly the Clash's fault that punk is associated with socialism anyway.

Punk = being a punk (as in a scumbag) and not giving a shit. Not 'being a right-on student opposed to money and profit'. People like Legs McNeil of Punk magazine and Johnny Ramone ie the originators of 'punk' in the 70s* were/are quite right wing.

Listen to the Pistols on the Bill Grundy show - quite openly revelling in the money they got and that they'd 'fucking spent it. Down the boozer'. Not given it to charity.

*your ACTUAL originators of punk like Iggy Pop and the 60s garage bands are probably even more openly welcoming of money etc than the 70s lot. By definition if you're a 'punk' you're a bit of an arsehole.

1 - literally and figuratively, The Mars Volta

2 - Tool (metal but still gorgeous)

3 - Opeth (very very metal but insanely melodic with far more music per square inch)

4 - dEUS (Most under-rated band ever)

5 - Built To Spill (Yankee stoner rock)

6 - Cherry Ghost (manc twangers - gorgeous)

7 - Elbow (awful live but great studio sound)

8 - The Redneck Manifesto (instrumental band probably not heard of outside Ireland - CHECK EM OUT!)

9 - Sub-Plots (formerly envelope). Again, Irish, Mogwai influenced, a little angsty at times but beautifully rhythmic and they rock)

10 - Interpol - dont hate them because they're on MTV and have silly haircuts. They are really good.

Clutch - the finest band I've ever seen live. Great slabs of blues rock with some of the best lyrics ever.

ISIS - huge sound, epic "post-rock".

Pelican - completely instrumental soundscapes.

Sons and Daughters - Glaswegian indie kids. Bit folky, punky attitude. Great live.

I'm enormously biased though - my grandfather was the English professor whose testimony made it possible for them to call that LP 'Bollocks'. We had a copy signed by the band thanking him - until my fucking gran gave it to Oxfam in the 80s

I got the album when it came out because I love Zeppelin. it took a while but it is a work of genius.

I saw him and them in Bristol last year, cost me £15 and I know that I will never see as good a gig as that again.

I was literally speechless afterwards it was so good.

Bigtime Pink Floyd fan here
and have been for about 30 years. I still listen to them, and have yet to get tired of the music.

That said, I don't admire Syd Barrett anywhere near as much as I admire David Gilmour- there's no doubt as to who's the better guitarist. But more than that- Gilmour has been a very large philanthropist in a very quiet way ever since they started really getting rich, and has proven to be generally a really decent human being. It wasn't until after Syd died that it came to light that Gilmour had been financially taking care of him for all those years. So he's the one exception I would make to putting a musician on a pedestal.

David Gilmour is my hero in guitarist terms, he's why I've got my Strat, and he does genuinely seem like a nice guy.

I agree regarding Waters- the man himself I find to be unpleasant, and I dislike his solo work. Sadly, he and Gilmour were much better writing together than either of them can do alone- the chemistry between them was great, but now seems to be forever lost.

I do still like Gilmour's solo work, though. And the stuff he's done with Rick Wright is fantastic! I was utterly thrilled to see the two of them tour together. They both still utterly rock!

1. Rilo Kiley - twangy, bouncy American indie rock. I've seen them live twice and would give up men for the lead singer. She lovely.

2. Tarja - I can't stand Nightwish, mainly because Stalker Girl sang her appalling renditions of their songs over and over at me in Switzerland (if you're reading this love, you're not a soprano, you sound like cats mating, and you're very lucky I didn't key your car the other day), but her solo stuff makes me go all tingly. (Mr Maladicta goes tingly for other reasons.)

3. John Denver - I grew up on his music thanks to hippyish parents and it's just part of the furniture now.

4. AC/DC - I've only really got into them recently but I love them muchly.

I'm told if you like the Cocteau Twins you should try early Hooverphonic - apparently Cocteau were a big influence.

Conversely I haven't actually got round to listening to the Cocteau Twins myself - can you recommend any of their best stuff?

EDIT: @al & vipros - AC/DC. I quite like 'em myself. But would you not admit that you only really need to hear one album to summarise their career?

well, yes and no. If you want to be mean, then yes they are a hard blues rock band and as such much of their music can sound quite similar, but if you like them, then this isn't a bad thing. And the different albums do offer different things.

Ok, the tunes are all different, but there is a "formula" of sorts to a lot (not all) of AC/DC. I listen to a lot of blues-rock myself, and I know a lot of it becomes very formulaic, (have you heard the Best of Elmore James?) though there are some artists who can miraculously pull it off without repeating themselves too much. They are few and far between though.

Do remember though that they didn't really make videos...it's all about the sound and in my opinion it hasn't aged at all - sounds as fresh and new now as it did then when it came out.

...were fucking brilliant. No-one cared at the time - no-one does now.

For a young chap in the mid-80s it was the closest you could get to seeing the Stooges or the MC5 - until the Stooges reformed: I saw the Funhouse gig at Hammersmith and was blown away.

AC/DC and Motorhead are both incredible live. Looking forward to checking out Airbourne too.

That said, Gong blew me away last week too, on a different tip.

Best I ever saw was Hawkwind at various free festivals in the 80s - however I was somewhat *enhanced* each time so perhaps my neurotransmitters may have been filling in a few gaps...
