I was chatting to some well-off friends recently, who reckoned it was cheaper to buy everything from small local shops, actually, because it's really cheaper in the long run.
Y'know, your specialist cheeses and your deli meats, and your exotic vegetables - they're hardly ANY cheaper at Waitrose.
Yup, I said, good tip, I'll keep that in mind.

Please tell me you're joking.
Also, WTF are deli meats? I've heard the phrase before, but I've never been able to figure out what they are. Is it a Yank phrase or something?

Why would 'specialist cheeses' be a joke? Artisan cheeses, obscure/expensive international cheeses like Vacherin Mont d'Or, etc. You may not buy them but surely you've HEARD of such things? Lots of towns have cheese shops selling fine cheese, you know.
And deli meats? Those cut from a joint for you, to your thickness specification - and number of required slices. As opposed to shitty vacuum packs of added water 'made from selected cuts of meat' ham. You know - like you get at the DELI COUNTER in a supermarket.
You have heard of supermarkets, I trust?
