Free Parking!
I like to park in parking garages, for some reason I think they are safer. I'll leave my car there for nigh well the whole day, knowing I owe the nice people who run the garages many monies i cannot afford( as I have probably spent my last on a pack of smokes) I will walk in where the cars enter, push the button to gain entry, give the new ticket to the attendant. As I have obviously only been parked in the garage for less than ten minutes, I do not have to pay. Victory, it is mine.

these places have CCTV on the entry machines, so that little ruse would be quickly discovered. And hereabouts, the first ten minutes is every bit as chargeable as the next hour.

Not really enforcable.
What if, after getting your ticket, you get inside to find the car park full? They have to allow you the opportunity to exit without parking, so usually there's a 10 minute or so grace period before the exit machine starts to charge.

At Gatwick they print your Reg on the ticket.

I have a mate who works in car parks and he explained.

There are pressure sensors before you reach the barrier, this activates the camera which takes a note of your number plate, the machine which issues the ticket does not give you a ticket unless the pressure plate has been activated with enough force (the weight of a small car).

This is me sticking it to you man!

I noticed the numberplate thing recently.
The ticket that I was issued actually had my car's numberplate printed on it. Quite sneaky, and probably costs so much they have to put the parking prices up to cover it.

In all truth
It really has only worked at one parking garage in the downtown area, and it is very old. But it's the only one I ever go to and so far, it has always worked for me.
