Gender specific portmanteaus
I guess this is related, one thing that really does my head in from recent years is the making up of stupid new words usually with the word 'Man' stuck in. EG:

BROMANCE: Call it a fucking buddy movie
MANCATION: Because what? Vacations are for girls only?
MANTRUM: When a guy has a trantrum.

But the worst one I've heard is:
MANGAGEMENT RING: An Engagement Ring for guys. For when the girl wants to propose.

Now, if i'm in love with someone I don't mind being proposed to. I'll probably say yes, and if she asked I'd probably wear an engagement ring too. But if she offered me a Mangagement Ring I'd throw it back in her face.

Besides, what kind of guy is so insecure he'd have a problem wearing an engagement ring but is then okay with it if he's told: "Don't worry it's a MANgagement ring"?

Apart from anything else, it's just so patronising. If I decide to, and have the balls to, wear some eyeliner, I'll damn well call it eyeliner. Or mascara. What it's called is the least of my worries. If I carry a bag, it's a bag. If it's big enough to carry all my worldly possessions in it, including my mascara, it's a big bag.

I'm all for evolution of the language, but only for the better. These words all suck, and should therefore be banned (actually, banning things makes it worse, ignored and unused would be better).

I wore an engagement ring. This was 11 years ago, and no-one ever tried to give it a silly name (don't think anyone really noticed). I read that as 'management ring' anyway, which is worse.

So does that mean that a woman in that partnership is engaged, but the man is mangaged ? Sounds like a fruit or something.

My fiance has an engagement ring. Everyone assumes it's a wedding ring. They assume he is married, usually to me (heh) but then they see my very obviously engagement not wedding ring (princess cut diamond wotsit) and then wonder if we're linked to different people. That or on first meet they assume I'm his fucking carer because his eyes look obviously "blind" and mine don't ... and two blind folks plainly couldn't be having a normal relationship according to some people.


Mangagement ring, manbag, - these words make some men scared of having such things because the words themselves are so fucking stupid, in my experience. It's just a ring, and a fucking bag !!!! Don't call it some odd new word when there are perfectly good ones for it already.
